Diet and Fitness - Critical Foods for Success

For anyone living in these times of fast food and poor nutritional choices, finding the right balance of convenience and quality of food can be a confusing task. We all know that it is important for us to eat properly maintain a certain level of fitness if we want to avoid many of the most common ailments and live a long and healthy life. There is so much information and misinformation available that sifting through it all can be a daunting challenge for even the heartiest of souls. Fortunately, there are some basic guidelines that you can follow to help you ensure that you are eating a healthy blend of the critical foods necessary for a successful diet and fitness program.

The human body requires the right combination of essential nutrients if it is to function at peak capacity. The most important of these nutrients is the carbohydrate. The body used carbohydrates to form glucose - which is either stored for later energy use, or expended immediately. Available in either complex or simple form, carbohydrates are the fuel your body needs to make it through each day. Simple carbohydrates like sugars, as well as complex carbohydrates such as fibers and starches make up a good percentage of the average person's diet. Too many carbohydrates, however, can be stored as fat if they are not used in a reasonable amount of time.

Protein is the second major source of nutrients, and is available in either animal or vegetable form. Whether acquired through meat or vegetable matter like soy, proteins are essential for the formation of healthy muscle and other tissue - as well as the formation of hormones. Fats are a third important nutritional requirement, and are divided into two types: saturated and unsaturated fats. Unsaturated fat is the healthier option. The body also requires a variety of vitamins and minerals for optimal performance.

So which are the best foods to eat for a successful diet and fitness regimen, and which should you avoid? The best foods for overall health are those with high antioxidant properties - especially fruit and vegetables. Walnuts, sunflower seeds, cabbage, and peppers are among the healthiest of foods that you can eat. In fact, produce should be the staple of your food choice selections. Lean meats such as chicken and fish should form the nucleus of your meat intake, with protein from nuts and various vegetables rounding out your muscle maintenance needs.

On the worst food list are such common foods as potato chips, French fries, hot dogs, and butter. Doughnuts are another taboo food, as is any kind of smoked or barbequed meat. A high saturated food that may surprise you with the harm that it can do is cheese. And it almost goes without saying that salt should be avoided wherever possible.

The important thing to remember is that your diet is a major part of your overall fitness plan. Living a longer and healthier life requires a dedication to personal fitness that encompasses more than going to the gym three times a week. With the right blend of food and fitness, you can not only live longer - you will have the health necessary to enjoy those extra years to their fullest.
